In the conversation, the man/woman __________. However, __________. And the

woman/man offers him/her two possible solutions. One of the solutions she/he comes up with is_________. ___________. The other is _________. ___________. And I think the second solution serves his/her purpose better. /I tend to agree with the second solution. First,____________________. Also,_____________

  Sample answer:

In the conversation, the man accidentally erased the draft of his research paper from his computer. However, he doesn’t have any backup( 备份), so he is unable to meet the deadline.

The woman offers him two possible solutions. One of the solutions she comes up with is that he should call the technical department to recover the file. It is true that they are closed, but they offer an emergency number. The other one is to call the professor in the morning and ask for an extension. But he is afraid that he might be taken points off.

I think the second solution serves his purpose better. First, the kind professor would understand and might not deduct points from his final grade if he explained everything and that wouldn’t be so much trouble compared to the first option. Also, he wouldn’t pay extra fees for the service out of regular hours.

  Instructions

M: Hi, Diana. Have you finished your course selection for this semester?

W: No. that is what I have to hesitate about. You know, I am always a big fan of Professor Brown.

I have longed to take his French Revolution course and by now there are still a few openings in his class.

M: Great! Then why not just sign for the class? It is still pretty early for

  choosing and dropping classes.

W: Well, my problem is that my sister just gave birth to a baby. Besides, her husband has been sent abroad for a few days. You know, I can’t simply leave my sister alone at this moment. So, I probably have to spend quite a few weeks taking care of her.

M: That is very nice of you. But you don’t want to miss Professor Brown’s French Revolution course either, do you? Hum, I think I understand your problem. Listen, why not try to 1) skip that course this semester? You know you can register for it again next semester. I am sure your sister will be fine then.

W: Oh, I wish (转折) I could take it now. I really don’t know who is going to teach the French

Revolution course next semester. It probably will not be Professor Brown. I heard that he is traveling to Europe immediately after he finishes the teaching this semester.

M: Sorry, I didn’t know it. Probably you can try another way. You can 2) ask your sister’s neighbors to take care of her for a while and as soon as you finish the French Revolution course, you can start to look after your sister.

W: That’s a good idea. You know, the neighbors are all very nice people. They will certainly watch over my sister for me. But a neighbor is a neighbor and family is a family. I don’t want to disappoint my sister by simply not showing up. Anyway, for me. Family is always the most important of all.

  Sample answer:

In the conversation, the woman wants to take French Revolution course, but she can’t because she has to take care of her sister [, who just had a baby and her brother-in-law was not at home. 可以省略]

The man offers her two possible solutions. One of the solutions he comes up with is to skip that course this semester and register it again next semester. But she is afraid that it won’t probably be the professor she likes because he would be traveling to Europe immediately after the course.

The other solution is to ask her sister’s neighbor for help. And as soon as she finishes the course, she can start to take care of her.

I tend to agree with the second solution. First, she wouldn’t miss the course she likes to choose, and her sister wouldn’t be left alone, either. Also, her sister would understand her situation because she would still be able to come back to give a hand if she finished the course.

  Listening

  Listening scripts:

M: This just isn’t going to work.

W: Uh, what are you talking about? Is something the matter?

M: Yeah, actually, I have a big problem. You know that I’ve got that internship in the Chemistry Department, right?

W: Know about it. That’s all you ever talk about! So, uh, what’s the problem then?

M: Well, it’s too much work for an unpaid job. I really need some cash, especially since I keep on finding myself short of money these days.

W: You should 1) find yourself a part-time job. That seems like the logical thing to do. You could just work on weekends, and then you’d have a supply of money coming in.

M: Yeah, I could do that, but that would be really hard on me. I wouldn’t have any free time at all if I got a job. I’m not sure I could stomach (v. 消化, 忍受) that.

W: Do you have a better idea then?

M: Hmm… I suppose I could just 2) share a lot of my work with some of the other interns. You know, they don’t seem to do too much at their jobs. I’m the real workhorse (老黄牛,主力).

W: Okay, but what will your boss think about that? What if he thinks you’re getting too lazy and then decides to get rid of you?

M: Oh, I hadn’t considered that at all.
