  一、Task 1

One of your friends wants to drop out of college. Do you think it is a good idea or not? Why?

I disagree that my friend to drop out of college. Firstly, in china. one needs to work really hard to get in to college and you definitely need a college degree to get yourself a job. it's very hard, if not impossible, for a high school graduate to find a job. Secondly, the benefit of a college education goes beyond getting you a job. To be a well-rounded person with comprehensive knowledge in different fields. One needs to go to college. you study economics to better understand the economy. Psychology gives you knowledge about people's motives and desires. Based on these point I disagree that my friend should drop out of college.

  Task 2

Your professor is asking you to help with some research work on the weekend, but you have planned to go to your sister’s birthday party. Which would you choose to do? Explain why?

Personally, I would say I'd like to go to my sister's birthday party and spend some quality time with her. To begin with, there are far more important stuff in life than just doing research in school and keeping a high GPA, my family members are also very important to me. My sister's birthday only happens once a year, it will be a shame for me to miss it, and I bet she will be very excited if I show up in the party. Additionally, I can put off the research for now, and I think the professor is a considerate person, and he will understand my tough situation.

  二、Task 1:

If your friend were dropping out of the college, would you consider it a good thing?

I don't think it is a good thing and will suggest him to change his mind for the following reasons. First, the problem that caused him to consider a drop-out may be solved in many other ways. For example, changing a major, transferring to another university, or simply taking a gap year. Second, dropping out of college will shut many doors for him since he does not have a basic bachelor degree like others. College not only provides us with basic knowledge, but an environment to grow in an all-round way, like, how to make time management, how to communicate and get along with others etc. Without this solid foundation, he will face more obstacles, which makes this dropping out option pretty impulsive and irrational.

  Task 2:

  帮助教授完成重要科研任务还是参加姐姐的生日派对?

I would choose to help my professor to finish his important academic research though attending my sister's birthday party is pretty important to me as well. But if the two things overlap, my sister will definitely urge me to pick the former one, coz she is quite supportive of my study; she quit her study years ago, coz she says she really doesn't have any talents for book learning, but right now, she is a successful young business woman operating a big company; every time when we get together, she keeps telling me, the top priority for me is always to do well academically coz I got the talents; and each time when I bring back my scholarship and straight A score-report, she will become extremely satisfied and happy.

I don't agree with the statement. First, it is true that kids might be tempted to behave well in school for getting money to buy whatever they want, but this kind of mechanism simply leads to pure money worshipping; who pays the money for kids born into poor families? What if one day the incentive no longer exists any more? Second, I think there are other alternatives to achieve this goal, like kids could be rewarded with interesting books or given certain honors if they behave well. In certain cases, money might be a magical expedient, but it is crucial for kids to be instilled with correct values.

  三、Task 1

If your friend were droping out of the college, would you consider it a good thing?

范例I do not think it is gonna do any good. To start with,my friend might have trouble finding jobs since everybody now has a college degree, it is like a footstone to get a job, because all the employers would think that if you do not graduate from the college, you do not have the basic knowledge and kinds of skills to accomplish the tasks they might asign to you. It just that you are not quite qulified. What's more, I think my friend gonna lose some really preious moments, such as kinds of feild trips, school activities, graudation ceremony or even a lot of great parties. The most preious thing we have in life are moments, we should make the most of them before they disappear. We should enjoy them while we still can. So if my friend drop-out, when he look back, he gotta nothing.

  Task 2

  帮助教授完成重要科研任务还是参加姐姐的生日派对?

范例You know what, actually, it's really a dilemma. But from where I stand, I definitely gonna go to my sis's birthday party. The family is a very important part of everyday life. Not only is it important for each person in the family to participate in family functions, but it is also important that the family members present to each big family moments, such as the birthday. I think, when my life is almost over, it won't matter, how many times I helped my professor or how much money I made or hours I worked. What does matter is what memories I made, the hours I spent with the one that I loved. my sis' birthday should be a time, my family come together, everyone fully present, creating memories that will last forever.
