  Task 1

If a foreign friend is going to visit your hometown and does not know what to pack, what suggestions do you have?

  Sample answer:

Well, there are several pieces of suggestion that I would like to give. First, he/she should check the weather of my hometown before leaving in order to make sure what kind of clothing he/she has to take. Though it’s almost winter now in my hometown, the temperature fluctuated like a roller coaster last week, ranging from 10 degree Celsius to 30 degree Celsius, which is crazy. Also, remember to bring some medicine for emergency. As you know, it is possible that he/she is not able to get accustomed to the local environment or food the first few days after arriving. If I get to somewhere in the first time, having some local food, I always suffer from diarrhea right after that. Last, do not pack too much; leave some room for the gifts or souvenirs he/she will buy. Trust me, there are so many nice stuff with a lower price that are worth buying.

Teachers let students choose topics that interest them on research papers. Others assign topics to students. Which one do you think is better?

Sample answer: well, personally, I would like the teacher to assign topics to students for two reasons. First, it is a better way to enlarge our knowledge. As you know, there are always some topics that are of little interest to us. If we only focus on the topics that we are interested in, we will never have a chance to get to know the knowledge beyond that. Besides, since so many fields of study are related, you never know when knowledge from one area will be helpful in another. It will definitely broaden my academic horizon. In conclusion, as the saying goes, “Knowledge is power”, sufficient knowledge can carve out a way to success. Therefore, it is necessary for teachers to assign the topic to students.

  Task 3

  Reading:

The student proposes that the university should create a website for student musicians where they can find people of the same interests and post information about concerts or music related events..

  Listening:

The woman agrees for two reasons.

  1. She and her friends always practice songs together, and they play rock music. However, they don’t happen to know a drummer who could play the drum. But now, with the website, they could find one easily.

  2. When she goes to campus concerts, there are few people there. That’s because people don’t know about those concerts. So now, with the website, more people will come to the concerts.

  Reading:

Signal redundancy means that animals will send the same message with different types of signals to inform the other animas of the same species.

  Listening:

The professor gives an example in class. A group of deer sometimes graze together and sometimes one of the deer would go off and eat on its own. When this deer sees a predator like a lion approaching, it will raise its tails to inform the rest of the deer to run away from the area. But sometimes the other deer cannot see the signal. So this particular deer will also dump its foot on the ground to make some noise. When other deer hear the noise, they will run away.

  Task 5

  Listening:

Prb: the woman hurt herself when she’s playing basketball. So she got a pulled muscle, but she has important games coming up.

Solution 1: she can stop playing to let the muscle recover faster.

Solution 2: She can do some exercise before playing games.

Opinion: The second solution is better. First, the coming games mean a lot to her. If she stops practicing, she will not perform well during the games. It is awful to lose the game anyway. Besides, she can pay attention to her pulled muscle during the training, and doing exercise before playing really helps to prevent it from happening again.

  Task 6

  Listening:

Topic: Two advantages of fire for early humans.

  1. The first one is to allow them to make better stone tools. For example, they could use fire to heat the stone to a high temperature which could ship the stone to a sharp edge like a sharp blade. So the early humans could hunt more effectively.

  2. The second is to improve the early humans’ diet. For instance, raw potatoes were hard to digest. But if they used fire to heat the potatoes, it would be much easier to digest.
