马里兰洛约拉大学是一所天主教大学，于1852年建校。马里兰洛约拉大学的办学宗旨是激励学生在日益变化的世界里学习、领导和服务。马里兰洛约拉大学一直致力于天主教耶酥会的教育和灵性传统以及个人的自由教育理想和发展。耶稣会天主教的创始人圣依纳爵劳尤拉牧师命名了马里兰洛约拉大学，马里兰洛约拉大学是美国以洛约拉命名的四大学院之一。2009年8月15日，由马里兰洛约拉学院改为现名。
马里兰洛约拉大学分为文理学院、工商管理学院及教育学院。另外，马里兰洛约拉大学还设有一个临床中心和两个研究生中心。马里兰洛约拉大学提供本科课程、硕士和博士课程，专业设置广泛，开设的主要专业有：会计、生物学、化学、经典、通讯、计算机科学、经济学、工程、英语、财经、美术、全球研究、历史、信息系统/业务管理、法律及社会责任、管理/国际业务、市场营销、数学科学、现代语言与文学、教牧辅导、哲学、物理、政治学、心理学、社会学、语音语言病理学/听力学、神学、参观艺术与科学网站的完整大学、华盛顿蒙台梭利研究所、写作等。
