罕布什尔学院于美国马萨诸塞州的阿姆赫斯特。学院的建立源于史密斯女子学院，蒙特荷约科女子学院，麻省州立大学艾姆赫斯特本部以及艾姆赫斯特学院的校长级高等教育者联席会议上，大家在争论一个话题：什么样的教育系统最能让学生发挥自己的能量？
在这个会议上，传统的专业教育体系和新兴的自由式教育产生了非常激烈的冲突，最后，愤怒的自由式教育学家们正式宣布“我们要建立我们自己的学校来证明我们观点的正确！”
于是，在1965年，在艾姆赫斯特学院的校友哈罗德 F. 约翰逊捐助了6百万美元用于建立一所新兴的，在自由式教育概念为主体下的学院，美国福特公司的大力支持，以及一位捐助者无偿捐助800英亩土地后，汉普郡学院于1970年开始招收了第一个学生。
