约翰伯克天主高中成立于1899年，其原用名为“St。 John’s Academic School”，由纽约州Board of Regents认证成立。应纽约州大主教区(Archdiocese of New York)征召，1964年12月，学校迁至纽约州戈申地区橘子郡占地35英亩的新校园，并于次年根据著名本土慈善家John Stephen Burke更名为John S。 Burke Catholic High School，以彰显其对慈善的注重与尊崇。自80年代开始，学校建筑面积逐步扩大，教学设施也应时代发展而日趋先进。
伯克高中是纽约州唯一一所位于橘子郡(Orange County)的天主教私立高中，环境优美安全。学校以以拉丁语“Non Vox Sed Votum”(行动胜于言辞)为箴言，以蓝、白、银为其标志性颜色，标志着其严谨治学的校风。学生在校期间需穿着统一制服，且每年级均有不同的校服款式。学校课程按照Board of Regents的规定设置，提供纽约州高级高中文凭(Regents Diploma)。
